Reg E. Gaines' presentation of his solo performance piece, “The Last Celebrity,” is one of many campus programs presented by the New Jersey City University Lee Hagan Africana Studies Center in celebration of Black History Month.
“The Last Celebrity” premiered at Art House Production last February and is scheduled for many encore performances during Black History Month 2014.
The artistic director of the New York City Downtown Urban Theater Festival, Mr. Gaines is the Tony and Grammy Award-nominated writer of “Bring in da Noise/Bring in da Funk” and is currently writing/producing the Hip-Hop musical “FREE,” which is scheduled for performances this year.
Mr. Gaines is a former Nuyorican Poets Café Grand Slam Champ who has published three books of poetry and whose work is featured in many anthologies. He has read his poems on “The Arsenio Hall Show,” “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” “MTV Unplugged,” “Woodstock ’94,” MSNBC’s “Edgewise,” and HBO’s “Def Poetry.”
